In Galatians, we get a second glimpse at the Jerusalem council from Acts 15. The gospel was at stake, so Paul reminded them of what had been settled before. This time Paul says, “but we did not give up and submit to these people for even a moment, so that the truth of the gospel would be preserved for you” (Gal. 2:5). The choices we make are bigger than ourselves, and the way we live affects other people—for better or for worse.

We aren’t always consistent. Like Peter, we may stand up for what is right (Acts 15) and then live in a way that is contrary to our words (Gal. 2:11-13). This kind of inconsistency is serious and damages our witness. No one is so spiritually strong that they will never be inconsistent or hypocritical— even Peter and Barnabas did it (Gal. 2:12-13). We should be humble and examine our own behavior. Let’s not assume we are living in light of the gospel. Let’s make sure our lives are in sync with the truth.
