Week 10 Devo – THURSDAY
Peter again returns to his overarching theme of suffering as he claims that the suffering Christians face occurs so that God may “exalt them at the proper time” (Luke 14:11). Peter tells his readers even in the midst of trials we are to “cast our anxieties upon him, because he cares for us.” Peter’s command in verse 8 calls for another basic element in godly living, to “be of sober spirit.” He is telling believers to be disciplined in mind and body and not to be distracted by worldly pleasures. He goes on in verse 8 to command believers to “be alert” and vigilant because the Devil is out there seeking to “devour” believers.
We are also commanded to be on alert because the Devil is seeking to bring us away from God. If he was able to tempt Eve in a perfect garden, how much more can he tempt us in an imperfect world? We need to guard ourselves from all evil and temptation. Proverbs 4:23 tells us to “guard our heart, for it is the wellspring of life.” We are also commanded to be firm in faith knowing we are not the only ones suffering.
How can you guard yourself and resist the Devil?
