Week 20 Devo – WEDNESDAY

Gospel-Centered: My Sin

Do you understand what sin is exactly?

The Bible says that “all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23). That word sin comes from an archery term that means “missing the mark.” There is a standard for living that people must reach – that standard is perfection. The reason we must be perfect is because God is perfect, and anything that is not perfect cannot please Him or come into His presence. A person could live a life that is almost perfect, but when he falls short in one area, he has missed the mark for how he must live his life.

Think about the Ten Commandments. They were the laws that God gave us so that we would be aware of how we should live. They were given to God’s people as the target. Anyone who could keep those commandments would please God, know God, and avoid His wrath. Anyone who committed those sins missed the mark. The bad thing is, once mankind sinned, it did not matter how many good things we did after that, sin would always separate us from God. It is like putting poison in a milkshake – no matter how much ice cream you add to the glass, the poison is still in there.
