Week 7 Devo – TUESDAY
The idea of government is not specifically Christian; however, it is good for us. In the Old Testament, we see kings established and leaders anointed by God, but that doesn’t mean our modern model of government is Christian or godly. Does it model certain biblical qualities? Yes, but we don’t see three houses of government or checks and balances in the Bible.
In Romans 13, Paul encourages us to support the government that is placed over us because no one is given a position without God’s involvement. In His sovereignty, God is divinely orchestrating, even when we don’t understand what’s going on – even when we are left questioning. Our ignorance compared to God’s sovereignty doesn’t give us a pass to think, speak, or act in ways dishonoring to those in leadership positions.
It is good to have government and laws – and people enforcing those laws. It is good to rest in the fact that God knows what He is doing. It is good to put our confidence in a God who is always in control of all things.
