When Martha’s brother, Lazarus, became sick, she sent word to Jesus to come to heal him. However, Jesus took three days to arrive, and during that time, Lazarus died. This Scripture passage picks up with Martha’s questioning and blaming Jesus. Jesus told her that Lazarus would rise again. Martha, confused, thinks that Jesus is talking of His return when all His children will rise and go to heaven. Then, Jesus proclaims that He is the Resurrection and the Life.

How did Jesus claim that He was God?

When Martha came in contact with Jesus, she was confused and angry, but she still called Jesus “Lord.” By calling Him Lord, she shows that even during a hard time when she is upset, she still realizes that He is God.
