Daniel knew that God was full of mercy. But what is mercy? Mercy is when we don’t receive the punishment we truly deserve. As sinners, we deserve to be separated from God for eternity. But because of God’s mercy, He has taken that punishment away. Another word, grace, is similar but it means that we “receive something we don’t deserve.” An example of grace is that we receive eternal life and heaven when we surrender to Jesus – even though we don’t deserve it.

Daniel had seen God’s mercy several times throughout his life and his experiences. He also gave mercy to those who didn’t deserve it. Why? Because he was imitating this characteristic of God.
