This passage is packed with great and challenging truth about spiritual gifts. Believers can’t take credit for the gifts God has given them. They are simply called to use the gifts – prophecy (speaking God’s truth), service, teaching, exhortation (instruction and encouragement), generosity, leadership and mercy – to build up the Church. Paul is painting a picture of diversity, but with a unification of direction. He lets us know that it’s OK to be different, and though God gifts each believer differently, He intends these gifts to be used for a unifying purpose. God desires for His Church to be unified, and that is why He gave each church member a different gift. When all those gifts come together and are used properly, what a beautiful impact the Church can make!
